My name is Amanda Kremberg and I am the Graduate Assistant in the Orientation and New Student Programs department. I wanted to inform you that we have an upcoming Explore Next Door event on March 14, 2009 going to the NY City Center for a Paul Taylor Dance Company performance. All undergraduate students are welcome to attend and all train, subway, and show tickets for the trip are FREE.

The trip is led by a faculty member and a student leader and was designed to help students to experience events and activities that they would normally not attend on their own. It is also a great way to meet their fellow students.

Attached is the flyer for the event. Sign ups for the trip begin March 4 during common hour. Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,

Amanda Kremberg

5 SHADES OF PINK

by Melissa J. Edwards, Class of 2009

A Graduate Thesis Performance Exploring Biracial Identity in the 19th Century

The 5 Shades of Pink: A Coerced Identity

explores the influences of the 1859 play The Octoroon by Dion Boucicault, miscegenation laws, and the U.S. Census on biracial identity. All these factors are used in the analysis of the racial identity of Sally Maria Diggs, a 9-year-old girl whose freedom was purchased by the congregation of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, through the efforts of the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher and his associates. The performance is intended to educate and present the theories of social impact on racial identity while providing historical fact and content.

This event is free and open to the public.

Calling all actors, dancers, and creative people with soul!

My producers and I will be holding auditions for my new Hofstra Filmmaker’sClub movie on Monday March 2nd in Dempster Hall, room Studio C from 6 P.M. to 9 P.M.

The movie is called My Popcorn Nights and it follows a girl (20) who works in a movie theater. It’s a light romantic comedy that juxtaposes the hardships of working a job with the butterflies of love.

Roles:

We are looking for both Male and Female lead actors as well as a few other speaking parts. If you go to school here, we totally want you. You will be asked to read off of our script when you arrive but if you have any monologues prepared we’d love to get to see those too (but it’s not anecessity).

All actors must be available to film through April 6th (the first few days of Spring break)…

Thanks for your time and I hope to see some of you soon,

Dan Slottje

Richland Theatre is breaking new ground with their Spring 2009 production of the dramatic comedy In Real Life [IRL]. Written and directed by Richland faculty Michelle Stephens, the play centers on the day to day struggles of three mentally challenged roommates in New York City and their struggles with life, the universe, and everything. Livvy Starr, a young, gifted, but agoraphobic painter, uses a live webcam stationed in her living room as a means to reconnect with the outside world in an effort to find the strength to return to college. In a bold and innovative move, the entire play will be broadcast live on the internet every night of production from the webcam located on the stage.

In Real Life has been garnering national attention as several colleges across the country will be hosting viewing nights on their campus and talkback sessions after the show to explore the ramifications of this new integration of media and theatre and the implications that it has for the future of stage performance as we know it. The play runs  March 27, 28, and 29 and April 3, 4, and 5. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 3pm CST. Anyone can watch online for free by following the link from the Richland homepage.
