The StrawHat Auditions is celebrating it’s 31st year as one of the best known combined auditions for young actors looking to start their careers in the theatre; in summer stock, regional theatre and other productions. For many students, the StrawHats are the first audition experience they prepare for; and in that preparation, learn what is required not only for the StrawHats but for any professional audition they attempt.

The auditions are run by a successful Broadway actress and a former talent manager. We run the auditions with an emphasis on communicating to actors how to prepare a resume; what makes a good headshot; what kinds of songs and monologues are appropriate for actors of their age and experience; even suggestions on how to dress for an audition. The idea is that the actor needs to know what is appropriate in the application stage; and if accepted, what is expected for a successful audition.

Actors who are selected to audition at the StrawHats prepare their materials and get the experience, usually their first, of doing an important audition in a major theatre in New York City. That experience includes a dance call; and an evening of callbacks where they read sides, sing additional music; whatever the theatres need to make their decisions and make offers. Afterwards, they can enjoy the New York theatre experience and take in a show and enjoy all the theatre landmarks that make acting in New York an irresistible choice every year.

The auditions not only serve actors, but also give a platform to staff, tech and design candidates looking to start their careers. The theatres who attend the auditions are looking for your students to fill roles, sing and dance in the chorus, design sets; in essence to be the backbone of their theatres, where they will work too hard, stay up too late and have the time of their lives.

We look forward to hearing from you!
